About Aruna

Born on 26-02-1966, to Prof. V.Shama Bhat & Himavathi at Manipal, Aruna had her toughest crisis at the age of six years in 1972, when she lost her site completely due to retinal detachments in both eyes. As per expert ophthalmologists, this was pathological myopia, which could not be treated successfully with the best medical facilities available at the Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Manipal, or anywhere else at that time,  In addition, due to arthritis, her fingers became distroted and lost strength,  Orthopeditians, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic experts could not offer any solutions. her parents became distraught at their helplessness.  They were desperate about her education and future.

Her Father, Prof.V.Shama Bhat was a senior professor of physics who served first at Manipal Institute of Technology and then a Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. From 1976 to 1999, he served  as Professor and HOD of Dental Materials at College of Dental Sciences, Manipal. He is still busy as Professor & HOD (Dental Materials) at the Dental College of Yenepoya University, Mangalore.  Aruna's Mother, Smt.Himavathi was a Housewife. Father & Mother were the two eyes of Aruna.
Shs has 3 brothers also to support her. The whole family had a tough time to facing the situation, trying to focus on effective steps to ease her future.  Luckily, Sri. Sathya Sai Baba, visited Manipal for the first time during this very critical period of her life.  They were very much influenced by his divine presence and discourse. This made them accept the spiritual path of consolation and as a solution.

Multi talented, MANIPAL ARUNA KUMARI, is the First A-Grade, blind Veena artist of A.I,R. She has lost her complete vision by retinal detachments and also the strength in fingers by arthritis,at the tender age of six years! These are the main requirements for mastering Veena.

She has acquired good experience in Veena rendering, Carnatic classical Vocal music and in playing violin.   She had a brilliant academic carrier in these and is also a post graduate in Sociology.  She had her advanced studies in Veena rendering techniques under the world famous Vainika, Shri, Thrissur A.Ananthapadmanabhan, A-Top Veena artist of A.I.R. Thrissur and has already conducted more than 1000 Veena concerts, few accompaniments to Bharatha Naatyams, Vocal concerts, Fusion music (laya-Vaadya) etc.
